Windsurfing off the beach in front of the Riu hotel is brilliant! Having completed our third season at this location, we can confidently say that this is the best location on the island for windsurfing. A well hidden spot, because of its location, this spot offers the strongest wind on the island. When windsurfers are on 5.5meter sails in Santa Maria, clients at the Riu school are on 4.7 meter sails.
The beauty of this spot is you can start planning from the minute you leave the beach, all the way to mount lion. The wind is a little more side off shore here, so in the season (november to the end of may) we recommend this spot for more intermediate and advanced windsurfers.
In a week the spot can offer a mix of completely flat water to days when the water is a little more wavey. Clients who have windsurfed in Santa Maria and then come to this spot, rarely ever go back. Try it for yourself. Although this school is located in the Riu all inclusive hotel, the school is open to non riu clients and can be accessed from the beach or along the dirt road beside the hotel.
For those wanting to wave ride, the school is located 500meters from the world famous Punta Preta, home of world class waves.
Wind Conditions:
The windy season in Cabo Verde is November untill the end of May. This is when the trade winds blow across the Cape Verde Islands. The months with the strongest winds tend to be January to the end of March. During these months the islands have the strongest winds and often the largest waves (in the wave spots)
The months with the most consistent wind (avg 19knots) tend to be April and May.
From November until the end of May, the Riu is excellent for more intermediate and advanced windsurfers.
From June until October the winds are perfect for more beginner and intermediate windsurfers.

Rental Options
· Hourly, 5/10hour cards, & weekly rentals
We advise you to bring your own harness and wet suite if you have one. These can be stored at the school for you. From December to end of May, we recommend a 3mm shortie or 3/4 wet suite.
