SURF LESSONS & RENTALS (riu)

Sal has some of the most spectacular surf spots in the world, with waves to match.

Beginners

For those wanting to learn the sport there are beginner surf spots along the bay in which the Surf Zone is located. However, on certain days these same spots are home to waves challenging for even experienced surfers.

Note: All the waves here are dependent on an ocean swell. Therefore there is no garuntee of waves. When the waves come in, they are great, but we can not predict months or weeks before when there will be waves.

For those staying in the Riu hotel, there are no wave spots for beginners in front of the hotel. All lessons have to take place in Santa Maria. The cost of lessons does not include transfers. We can call a taxi for you, or you can walk down the beach to the other surf zone location. The wave spot is located beside the Santa Maria school.

From November to end of May, there will be weeks with great beginner waves, however it is also the windy season so there will be days when there is to much wind to learn to surf, as the wind will just blow you off the wave.

Intermediate to Advanced Surfers

When the westerly swell comes in, Sal is brilliant for more advanced surfers. There are spots all along the west coast, which are home to some of the most beautifull waves in the world (see Map and Wind Page). To reach these waves, you will have to hire a pick up truck to get to them.

Sal is also home to Punta Preta, know for its world class waves that will wow even the most experienced of surfers. . .

Surf Zone offers both Surf Board Rentals as well as Surf Lessons.

Rentals: Our rentals range from hourly to weekly. All our boards come with leashes and are cleaned and waxed. At the Zone we sell lycra’s in the event that you forget yours. However, wax is precious on the island, so if you are going to need a lot, bring a bar with you.

For longer term rentals, you are free to take the board with you to your accommodation (however we ask that you leave a 150euro deposit, which will be returned to you when the board comes back), or you can store it at the centre.

Our Boards range from custom Angulo and Salt Rock boards to NSP boards. Sizes range from 6’4 to 10’2

The majority of our surf boards are stored at the Santa Maria location. However, you can pre book a board and have it waiting at the Riu upon your arrival. If at any point you would like to change your board size, you are welcome to come to the Santa Maria location and change boards. The boards are stored at this location, as the two main waves spots in the area are located in the Bay of Santa Maria.
